Oral assessment. Before any cleaning begins, your hygienist will review your health history and take a brief look at your mouth, checking for changes in your gum tissue, any areas of concern, and the general condition of your teeth and existing dental work. If it has been more than six months since your last visit, or if this is your first visit, digital x-rays may be taken to give a complete picture of what is happening between and beneath your teeth.

Scaling. This is the core of a professional cleaning. Your hygienist uses precise hand instruments and, where appropriate, an ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus (tartar) and plaque from above and below the gumline. Calculus is hardened plaque that has mineralized onto the tooth surface over time. No amount of brushing removes it once it has formed. This step is what makes a professional cleaning different from anything you can do at home.

Polishing. After scaling, your hygienist will polish your teeth with a gritty paste and a rotating brush or rubber cup. For most healthy adults, a cleaning every six months is appropriate and is the interval most dental insurance plans cover. However, your ideal frequency depends on your individual oral health.

Every six months is right for most patients with healthy gums, low cavity risk, and consistent home care.

Every three to four months is often recommended for patients with a history of gum disease or periodontal treatment, patients who are prone to heavy calculus buildup, patients with dry mouth (which significantly increases cavity and gum disease risk), patients who smoke or use tobacco products, patients managing diabetes or other conditions that affect gum health, and patients undergoing cancer treatment.

If at any point you are uncomfortable, let your hygienist know. We can adjust our approach, slow down, or use topical anesthetic if needed. We are not in a hurry, and there is no obligation to endure discomfort in silence.

After the cleaning, the dentist will come in for your examination. This is a conversation, not a one-way assessment.
