Is sedation dentistry right for you?

Sedation dentistry is a great fit for patients who feel anxious or fearful about dental visits, have had a traumatic dental experience in the past, have a strong gag reflex, have sensitive teeth or a low pain threshold, need extensive work and want to complete it in fewer visits, have difficulty sitting still for long periods, are embarrassed about their teeth and have been avoiding care, or have physical or developmental needs that make dental visits challenging.

We also offer sedation for children. Ask us about our nitrous oxide options for younger patients.

Our sedation options

We will recommend the right option based on your anxiety level, the procedure involved, and your overall health.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) – Mild Sedation Our lightest option. You breathe a gentle mixture through a small nose mask and feel calm within minutes, fully awake and able to respond. Effects wear off in under five minutes, so most patients can drive home afterward. Safe for adults and children.

Oral conscious sedation – Moderate Sedatoin You take a prescribed sedative pill about an hour before your appointment. By the time you are in the chair, you will feel deeply relaxed, often drowsy enough to drift off. Most patients remember little or nothing about the procedure. A driver is required to take you home.

General anesthesia For patients who require the highest level of sedation, including those with severe dental phobia, complex surgical needs, or special healthcare needs. You are completely unconscious during the procedure. Pre-procedure fasting is required and a full escort home is mandatory.

Not sure which level is right for you? We will discuss all options at your consultation with no pressure and no judgment.

Dr. Ahmad’s sedation training and credentials

Your safety is our top priority, and sedation dentistry requires specific training beyond a standard dental degree.

Dr. Ahmad completed his hospital-based dental training, which included hands-on clinical experience in sedation dentistry across a wide range of patient needs, including managing patients with complex medical histories and special healthcare needs. His hospital residency exposed him to sedation protocols that most general dentists never encounter in a private practice setting.

What to expect at your sedation appointment

Before your appointment: We start with a consultation to review your health history, discuss your concerns, and recommend the right sedation level. For oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, we will give you specific preparation instructions including fasting guidelines.

On the day: Arrive with a trusted person to drive you home if you are receiving anything beyond nitrous oxide. Our team will welcome you, go over your plan, and administer the sedation in a calm, unhurried way.

During your procedure: You will be monitored continuously including heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure throughout. Dr. Ahmad’s hospital training means he is experienced managing sedated patients safely.

After your appointment: For nitrous oxide, you will feel normal within minutes. For deeper sedation, rest at home for the day. Most patients wake up the next morning feeling refreshed and often surprised by how much was accomplished in a single visit.
