How often do I need an Oral Cancer Screening?
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, nearly 50,000 people are diagnosed each year with oral cancer. Unfortunately, these numbers are increasing every year, and only a little more than half of patients diagnosed will be alive in 5 years.
The reason fatalities are so high is because oral cancer is often diagnosed late in its development. However, early detection and treatment can increase the 5-year survival rate by as much as 90%.
A screening for oral cancer is nothing to fear. Whenever you visit us for your routine exam or dental cleaning, our doctors will discuss your oral history and examine your mouth for signs of oral cancer. This includes a visual exam and using touch (palpating) your jaw and neck to look for abnormalities.
If you haven’t had an oral cancer screening in the last six months, please call Scottsdale Dental Centre to arrange an appointment.
